MindR Connect
Revolutionizing Vehicle Tracking and Fleet Management
The Challenge
MindR is an innovative company based in New Zealand, focused on providing intelligent vehicle tracking and security solutions. Their goal is to offer real-time, actionable insights into vehicle health and driver behavior while protecting assets against theft or unauthorized access. They needed a solution that would go beyond traditional GPS tracking by integrating active anti-theft technology, CAN bus telematics, and fleet compliance management tools—all into one compact and intuitive platform that could serve both individual vehicle owners and fleet managers.
Project Objectives
- Develop a real-time vehicle monitoring system
- Enhance theft prevention with proactive alerts and response mechanisms
- Provide deep vehicle insights using CAN bus diagnostics
- Assist fleet operators with compliance and servicing reminders
- Offer an easy-to-use interface for both individual users and fleet managers
Key Challenges
- Integrating hardware and software for real-time vehicle monitoring
- Developing active anti-theft mechanisms that work reliably
- Accessing and interpreting CAN bus data across different vehicle models
- Ensuring compliance with New Zealand transport regulations
- Creating a scalable solution suitable for both individual users and large fleets
Our Approach
Our team partnered with MindR to conceptualize, design, and develop a next-generation GPS-based vehicle monitoring platform called MindR Connect. We began with extensive research into vehicle telematics systems and New Zealand's transport regulations. Our approach focused on creating a comprehensive solution that would not only track vehicles but actively protect them and provide deep insights into their performance. We prioritized real-time data processing, security features, and user experience while developing a system that could scale from individual users to large fleet operations. Throughout the project, we maintained close collaboration with MindR's engineering team to ensure seamless hardware-software integration.
Research & Requirements Analysis
We began with a deep dive into vehicle telematics systems, studying CAN bus protocols, GPS tracking technologies, and New Zealand's transport regulations. Our team worked closely with MindR to understand their vision for a next-generation vehicle monitoring system that would go beyond passive tracking.
"Understanding the technical requirements for accessing vehicle data across different manufacturers was crucial to designing a solution that would work reliably across diverse fleets."
Hardware-Software Integration Planning
We designed the architecture for a system that would seamlessly integrate with MindR's compact GPS hardware unit. This involved creating protocols for data transmission, storage, and processing that would enable real-time monitoring while maintaining system reliability and security.
Data Architecture
Real-time processing pipeline
API Design
Secure device communication
Security Protocol
End-to-end encryption
Agile Development Process
We implemented an agile development methodology, breaking the project into sprints focused on core functionalities. This approach allowed us to test and refine features incrementally, ensuring each component met performance and reliability standards before integration into the complete system.
Testing & Deployment
We conducted extensive testing across different vehicle models to ensure compatibility and reliability. This included field tests of the anti-theft features, stress testing of the real-time monitoring system, and verification of compliance with New Zealand transport regulations before final deployment.
The deployment strategy included a phased rollout, starting with individual vehicle owners and gradually expanding to fleet operators, allowing us to scale the system while maintaining performance and reliability.
The Solution
Active Security System
Implemented a proactive security system with real-time intrusion alerts, remote horn activation, vehicle immobilization capabilities, and GSM jamming detection to prevent theft.
Advanced Telematics
Developed comprehensive vehicle monitoring that captures over 40 CAN bus parameters including location tracking, battery voltage, fuel levels, driver behavior, and diagnostic trouble codes.
Fleet Management Tools
Created a suite of tools for fleet operators including maintenance reminders, compliance alerts, service scheduling, and vehicle status monitoring to optimize fleet operations.
NZTA Integration
Built a secure data pipeline to sync with the New Zealand Transport Agency datalink, ensuring regulatory compliance and automating documentation requirements.

Technical Implementation
Compact GPS Hardware Integration
We developed firmware and software interfaces to communicate with MindR's compact GPS unit, enabling it to capture over 40 CAN bus parameters in real time while maintaining low power consumption and reliable connectivity.
Active Security Implementation
The security system was designed with multiple layers of protection, including motion detection, door sensors, and ignition monitoring. When unauthorized access is detected, the system can trigger alerts, activate the horn, and immobilize the vehicle while sending notifications to the owner.
CAN Bus Data Processing
We developed sophisticated algorithms to interpret CAN bus data from different vehicle manufacturers, extracting valuable information about vehicle health, performance, and driver behavior that could be presented in an actionable format.
NZTA Compliance System
The integration with New Zealand Transport Agency datalink ensures that vehicle compliance requirements are automatically tracked and managed, with timely reminders for WOF renewals, licensing, and Road User Charges (RUC).
