The Challenge
Auto-rickshaws are a vital component of urban transportation in India, yet many drivers face significant challenges, including low income, high operational costs, and limited access to affordable financing. Traditional financial institutions often hesitate to extend credit to drivers due to perceived risks and lack of formal documentation. This gap has historically forced drivers to rely on high-interest loans from informal lenders, perpetuating a cycle of debt and limiting their ability to invest in more efficient vehicles.

Our Approach
Recognizing these challenges, Ramesh Prabhu, a chartered accountant and MBA graduate from the Indian School of Business, collaborated with Dutch social entrepreneur Stef van Dongen in 2010 to establish TWU. The organization's mission is to empower auto-rickshaw drivers by facilitating access to affordable loans, enabling them to own and operate electric three-wheelers. By doing so, TWU aims to enhance drivers' incomes and contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing urban air pollution. As TWU's IT partner, CloudZent Technology Services implemented advanced web portals and a comprehensive Super Application to streamline operations and enable real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making.
Innovative Financing Model
TWU partnered with financial institutions to offer loans with low down payments and competitive interest rates. Drivers were organized into self-selected groups, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility.

Strategic Partnerships
TWU established strategic alliances with prominent vehicle manufacturers to accelerate the adoption of electric three-wheelers, including an agreement with Piaggio Vehicles to procure 3,300 electric three-wheelers.

TWU expanded operations to various regions across India, including launching services in Kerala with a target of financing over 1,000 electric two and three-wheelers within six months.
